The blue enamels in the baroque decorations of the churches of Palermo, Sicily: Fe2+-coloured glasses from lime kilns

Deep blue glasses coloured by octahedral Fe 2+ cations are often reported as textbook examples of blue pigmentation. However, despite the possibility of laboratory synthesis under reducing conditions, to date there are no well-reported occurrences of their production and use in the past. A thorough historical, ethnographic, mineralogical, and chemico-physical investigation of the 'smaltini di calcara' from several baroque churches in Palermo, Sicily, has revealed that the blue enamels widely used for altar decorations in the 17th and 18th centuries are actually a unique case of ancient blue glasses pigmented by divalent iron cations in distorted octahedral coordination. Quelques observations récentes sur des sites de l'Antiquité tardive à Autun (2001-2008)

This article describes the result of ten or so fairly limited preventive archaeology operations (surveillance of works, diagnostics not followed up with excavations) carried out over the last ten years that have nonetheless finalised knowledge of several deposits from Late Antiquity in Autun located intra muros but also outside the walls. The works have enabled us to renew our knowledge of the reduced enclosure and of three Late Antiquity necropolises, to discover the remains of a lime kiln from the end of the 4th century at the centre of a public zone (perhaps the forum), and lastly to point up the difficulties of interpretation of an occupation of two zones from the end of the 4th century…
